Yoga Workshop Weekend with Maneesh Kalra in Fukuoka: May 30th ~ June 1st 20

Date: May 30 (Fri) 3,500yen
Time: 19:30~21:00
Class: Discussion on Principles of Yoga and the Role of Asana
Description:
When you hear the word ‘Yoga’, what comes to mind?  For many, Yoga often elicits images of ‘poses’, ‘stretching’ or ‘relaxation’.  This discussion is an opportunity to delve deeper into the various definitions of Yoga, the various paths of Yoga, and the role of Asana as one of the tools or branches of Ashtanga (among other) Yoga.  We will ask the questions: ‘Why Asana?’ And ‘How can we use Asana to guide us on our journey?’  In this way, the discussion will set the mental stage for our approach to the weekend Asana workshops.

Date: May 31 (Sat)  5,500yen
Time: 10:00~12:30
Class: Surya Namaskara: The Beauty of Sun Salutations
Description:
In this workshop, we will cultivate an understanding of the principles of Ashtanga Yoga using the powerful Surya Namaskara sequence.   These sequences are the foundation of many asana-based practices, the basics building blocks.  So by practicing just the Sun Salutations, with extreme care, awareness and sensitivity, we can begin to understand ourselves, our habits, our preferences, and the power of yoga to diagnose and to create change.
Furthermore, Sun Salutations are often said to contain all the poses in the universe.  We will start to connect poses and positions within the sun salutation sequence to their related, more ‘advanced’ poses. In this way, the sun salutations can provide a template for all other poses you will ever do…

Date: May 31 (Sat)  5,500yen
Time: 13:30~16:00
Class: Ashtanga Yoga Principles and Safe and Healthy Backbending
Description:

Have you ever injured yourself or felt pain in a pose like backbending and wondered 'why'? Why do we push so hard? Why do we do asana if it hurts?
In this workshop, let’s go deeper into the yoga principles investigated in the previous two classes by applying them to safe and healthy backbending poses.  Through better understanding of the basic principles and 'why' we does poses, let’s learn to feel 'how' to approach any backbend and, in fact, any asana.

Date: June 1 (Sun) 5,500yen
Time: 10:00~12:00
Class: Ashtanga Vinyasa Led Class: The Dance of Breath and Movement
Description:
The Led Class is a unique opportunity to shine light on the darkness that is our habits.  The paced, flowing practice gives us yet another angle to view ourselves in the mirror of Asana.  Where a Mysore-style practice leaves off, the Led class begins; and vice-versa.

In this class, we will ask ourselves to begin the paradoxical process of surrendering while controlling, letting go of all that is unnecessary while maintaining focus and control of the breath, the body, and the mind.

Date: June 1 (Sun)  5,500yen
Time: 13:00~15:30
Class: Shoulder Openings for Arm Balances
Description:
Modern living, with all of the time we spend sitting in cars or trains or at work and on the computer, has made most of us suffer from stiff shoulders, neck and upper back at one point or another. This stiffness is not only an annoyance but can lead to more serious or debilitating conditions including headaches and constricted breathing.
By learning to open the shoulders in a healthy manner, we can start to create correct habits that support softness in and around the shoulder area, the neck and the upper back.  This suppleness creates a freedom for the critical breathing muscles to be more effective.  Better breathing means better oxygenation of the body. More freedom in the shoulders means better blood circulation as well. And of course, less stiffness in the shoulders and neck!
In this workshop, with the Yoga principles in mind, we will make use of basic shoulder opening stretches and poses to prepare our bodies for arm balances.  Then let’s see where it takes us…  Freedom awaits!

Maneesh Kalra

Surrounded by melodic kirtans, devotional mantras, and the philosophy of yoga and the Bhagavad Gita since early childhood, Maneesh found his passion for yoga rekindled as a young adult.

Under the tutelage of various prominent teachers in Asia, Maneesh developed a passion and devotion for Ashtanga and the healing powers of yogasana (poses) and pranayama (breathing).  This passion grew so intense that by 2006, it compelled him to leave the frenzied rat race of the corporate world behind and instead pursue full-time yoga studies in Mysore, India. While in India, Maneesh was blessed to study Ashtanga under the auspices of the reverent Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois, and his family.  He also deepened his understanding of yoga therapy and healing by studying some of the teachings from the Sivananda and Iyengar schools.

Maneesh has, however, been most profoundly influenced by the world-renowned teachers Chuck Miller and Maty Ezraty.  They have inspired and guided Maneesh to further deepen his interest in the therapeutic aspects of yoga, the power of the breath (often linked to the vital energy, prana), and the ultimate spiritual goals of yoga.

These variegated yoga experiences have taught Maneesh to appreciate how the tools of asana, pranayama and beyond help us to cultivate a higher level of awareness in ourselves. Maneesh hopes to share how these tools can help us cope with the pitfalls of modern life:  how asana can be used therapeutically in rebalancing the body to create healthy alignment; and how increased awareness and self-reflection can help us to go beyond our conditioning and improve how we see and relate with others and the world around us.
